We started this project to get my sister, Jennifer involved so she can enjoy a hobby besides being a workaholic and taking care of the parents. At first, she hesitated, lacking the confidence that she can learn something new and have fun doing it.
We started off with Dave designing the birdhouses, Jennifer sanding it, me painting them and then Jennifer applying the final sealer coat. Before you know it, we got her hooked! She looked forward to going to her own house, pullIng out these projects, turning on the radio and dedicatIng some time to herself. She started paying attention to details, coming up with new ideas. It motivated her to allow herself time to enjoy life. The finished project gave us all so much joy.
I kidded with Dave that we really downsized, from building homes, to building cabins, and now building birdhouses. At least now the process does not require passing inspections with the county or involving licensed contractors.
We hope to one day market our “village”. Each birdhouse has its own unique design. As we displayed our collection on top of our pool table, we wanted to expand our collection to include a church and a BBQ restaurant. I’m sure as the community grows, we’ll need to add new shops and recreation places. It’s been a fun journey.
